Brooklyn native Billy Durney first learned to smoke meat as a youngster while visiting his grandparents' cabin in rural Pennsylvania. After working and traveling for over 20 years in the security and private protection field, he fulfilled a longtime dream by opening Hometown Bar-b-Que in Red Hook.
Since opening Hometown in September 2013, Billy has been featured in national media such as Nightline, Good Morning America, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Bon Appetit, The Food Network, Cooking Channel and a variety of other major publications. He has made guest appearances and cooked at events and festivals across the world showcasing his specialized mufti ethnic brand of barbecue. In February 2019 he was nominated for a James Beard award for Best Chef: NYC.
Billy is currently opening three highly anticipated restaurants in 2019- Red Hook Tavern, Hometown Bar-B-Que Industry City, as well as Hometown Bar-B-Que Miami. "I love cooking with wood, and I love manipulating flavors," he says. "I'm just trying to cook the best bite I can cook. I don't know what to call it what we are doing in Brooklyn, but I'm very proud to be part of that community.
